Luis MillanDr. Luis Millán has been the Director of Orchestras at The University of Montana since 2003. In addition to conducting the orchestra, Dr. Millán leads the Classical Guitar studio and teaches Music Theory courses.  Dr. Millán has served as Music Director of Butte Symphony Orchestra since 2009. Dr. Millán is also in demand as a guest conductor and clinician.  Recent engagements include conducting All-State Orchestras in Oklahoma and Montana, and Orchestra Festivals throughout the Northwest.

In addition to conducting and teaching, Dr. Millán remains active as a classical guitarist.  Recent guitar performances have included concerts throughout the Northwest and recitals in Vienna, Austria; Shanghai, China; and Madrid and Cordoba, Spain.

Before arriving in Montana, Dr. Millán directed the Orchestra Program at Washburn University, Topeka, Kansas; conducted youth orchestras in Topeka, Kansas, and Jackson and Saginaw, Michigan; served as Music Director of OPERA ONE and Opera Company of Mid-Michigan, Lansing, Michigan; and taught at Michigan State University’s Community Music School and Flint Institute of Music, Flint, Michigan.

Dr. Millán holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota (1991) and Master of Music and Doctorate of Musical Arts degrees in Orchestral Conducting from Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan (1993, 1997).
